Veterinary Student Externships
Externs rotating through the Hops Center will spend their time in the emergency room. We ask that they come in on the nights and weekends, to fully maximize their learning experience. Our externs will obtain a history and perform and physical exam from new patients. With the assistance of the veterinarians on duty, the externs will develop a set of differential diagnoses, recommended diagnostics and therapeutics, and may creat a treatment sheet. The externs then can follow the progression of the case as the evening and the week progresses. Although externs cannot perform procedures, we encourage them to watch and assist in procedures and surgeries whenever possible.
We boast a warm, friendly, team atmosphere with a moderately busy caseload conducive to learning thorough diagnostics and treatments. The ER service works closely with a number of specialty departments within the building: Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Cardiology, Neurology, and Surgery.
Externs will have the ability to learn from the following:
Ultrasound
Doppler/Cardell NIBP
Pulse Oximetry
EKG
Endoscopy
Fluoroscopy
Echocardiography
MRI off site
CT Scanner
Our staff is composed of veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians/assistants who bring to our patients and their families the finest in medical training and unparalleled experience in veterinary medicine.
